Public Health

As the recent situation involving COVID-19 continues to evolve, Public Health Officials must be equipped to deal with a wide variety of scenarios.

The Public Health Advisory Group was established in order to better serve public health officials across Ontario, including Medical Officers of Health and Public Health Units. Our team provides strategic advice to employers in the area of public health.

Our employment and labour lawyers regularly deal with all aspects of employee/employer relationship, as well as the negotiation of collective agreements and grievances, arbitrations, and litigation arising from the collective bargaining process.

Our experienced Litigation department provides expert legal advice on pubic health matters, such as interpreting and enforcing public health legislation, including the Health Protection and Promotion Act and the Immunization of School Pupils Act and their respective regulations.

In addition to legal advice, our lawyers conduct hearings before the courts, as well as the Health Services Review and Appeal Board on behalf of public health officials, including prosecutions under the Provincial Offences Act in relation to public health matters and appeals of public health orders.

The chart below outlines the enforcement of the Health Protection and Promotion Act relating to a communicable disease such as COVID-19.
